Why We Need to Promote Breast Cancer Awareness?

With the rise in the number of cases of breast cancer, there is an increased need to thoroughly understand what breast cancer is and what role one can play to spread awareness about it.

Breast cancer is a vicious malignant type of disease that begins in the cells lining the ducts and lobules of the breasts. If left untreated, it can readily metastasize to other parts of the body and could lead to a devastating end. However, if identified at the right time, its treatment can be highly effective. Early detection is the key to survival. Hence it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

Some Facts About Breast Cancer

  • It is the most common type of cancer in women. 99% of the cases occur in women. Although rarely, it is found in men too.
  • 3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide in 2020.
  • The risk of breast cancer increases with age, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, increased exposure to radiation, and family history.
  • One can lower the risk of breast cancer by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, and reducing the amount of alcohol intake.
  • Breast cancer has a high prevalence with an equally high survival rate.

Signs and Symptoms

Even though the signs and symptoms are not the same for everyone, it is still helpful to know the ones that are commonly found in most cases. Here are some warning signs:

  • Hardened lump in breast or armpit
  • Skin dimpling

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The month of October is solely dedicated to the purpose of spreading awareness about breast cancer. Since 1985, every year, people from all around the world have engaged in a campaign to broadcast breast cancer.

How Can We Spread Awareness?

There are multiple ways you can get involved in the campaign of awareness, some of which are listed below:
